Abstract: | Being a major channel of Muslim learning throughout a large part of the western Sudan, the Dyula form the central point of discussion in this paper on Islam and its influence on learning. Examined are the way in which learning is handed down over the generations, the relationship between trade and learning, and the role which a universalistic code plays in the establishment of conditions for a flourishing long-distance trade crossing ethnic and linguistic frontiers. These and other topics are specified in the following parts of the paper: Introduction: the Dyula towns. 2. Education in the Dyula towns. 3. The 'isnads' and the Saghanughu. 4. Medieval learning: the Malian background. 5. The modern period: al-'Abbas Saghanughu to the present. 6. The role of the 'ulama'. Notes, fig., tables, index. |
