| Abstract: | The weakening of rural Algerian landholding rights witnessed a generation after the 'sénatus consulte' of 1863 was not necessarily due, as many writers have claimed, to internally debilitating trends caused by this law and the subsequent Warnier law of 1873. Evidence from contemporary reports of the 'cercles militaires' suggests a resurgence of Algerian communal consciousness after 1873 and nascent attempts to adjust to new competitive conditions on the frontier between 'douar commune' and 'commune mixte'. The cause for failure should be sought in the changing political environment of colonialism. Notes, French sum. |
