| Abstract: | Description of the economic and political situation of the small island of St. Helena, which is one of Britain's last colonies, ruled by Whitehall and a local colonial administration. Because the island, after years of vital importance to the sea routes, has now collapsed into obscurity, in 1974 the government introduced an integrated development plan, based on a series of reports by visiting experts and advisers, commissioned by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the overseas Development Administration, in order to try and revitalize the island's development. The author describes the plan and the findings of three tests of opinion he undertook about the plan among islanders and officials. Bibliogr., tab. |
