Abstract: | This essay is primarily concerned with the indubitable relationship between society, literary culture and the interrogation and perception of both in the contemporary. Nigerian setting. Specifically, it identifies, revises and criticizes the discernible ideological standpoints that have come to characterize critical discourse on and evaluations of Nigerian literature. First, some random prefatory notes are made on the theory and history of culture criticism in general. Chapters: 1) Criticism and social ideology. 2) Mutations of ideology in the criticism of Nigerian literature (art-for-art criticism - bourgeois cultural anthropological criticism - bourgeois sociological criticism - the radical imperative).
