Abstract:Some of the methodological, theoretical, linguistic and other problems faced by social scientists involved in development planning are discussed on the basis of Ethiopian experiences in the pre-1974 period. The author urges a shift in research directions, from the urban to the rural areas, and from strictly academic endeavors to the direct applications of social science theory and method. Notes, refs.
