Abstract: | In this article an effort is made to show to what extent Western views on the psychotherapeutic effectiveness of a therapist are applicable to the treatment and training of prospective Xhosa amagqira who function as psychotherapists in their community. The concepts of analytical psychology and the training of analysts are used as a background for comparative purposes. Aspects discussed: Thwasa, the initial psychic disturbance - The role of the ancestors in sickness, healing and training - The place, understanding and use of dreams - Beating dances - Ritual ceremonies in general, including the ritual sacrifice. Ref., sum. (also in French, German, Afrikaans). |
