Abstract:Throughout the whole period between the 14th and the early 16th centuries the resistance of the non-Christian population in the Ethiopian interior was deep-rooted. It appears that only the superior military might of the Christian rulers kept their heterogenous Empire together. In terms of the expansion of the Christian religion, the indomitable spirit of resistance of the pagan population seems to be represented by the syncretistic elements in the beliefs and religious practices of the ordinary Ethiopian Christian. As illustration of pagan resistance against the Church in northern Gojjam serves a text and translation of a passage which deals with the conflict between the Agäw and Abba Zäyohannes in the hagiography of Zäyohannes.
