Abstract: | A thorough understanding of the legal progress so far achieved in continental, sub-Saharan Africa can disclose the content and social impact of legal norms and the motives and direction of legal evolution and change. In addition, it is an essential prerequisite for the successful organisation of scientific work itself and its further development. Such a task of synthesis demands a complex approach, and a philosophical method which is capable of accomplishing it. Traditional legal philosophy is inadequate since it fails to study the rules of law and the legal system in their social and economic context. In the present article the author argues that the most suitable approach to the task of synthesising our knowledge in the field of African law is the materialist method of cognition and the dialectical logic it utilises.
