Abstract: | The Ashanti Times, (1947) published twice weekly at the mining town of Obuasi, developed from the house journal of one of the colony's most powerful mining companies. It made no secret of its affiliation to the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation, nor of its sympaties for expatriate participation in the African economy. It owned its existence almost entirely to the initiative of the Chairman of Ashanti Goldfields, the late Major-General Sir Edward Spears. The article describes the history of this journal (since 1959 the New Ashanti Times), which never reached the status of a national newspaper and closed down in January 1970. Notes. |
