Abstract:Asian here refers to those persons whose ancestors were resident in the sub-continent of India. The Asians constitute the most important non-European immigrant community in Africa, numbering approximately 900,000. The economic position of the Asians is greatly influenced by a number of non-economic factors. Social, cultural and religious customs and beliefs within the community, as well as the friction arising the relation between the community and other racial groups, have a direct bearing on the size and composition of the labour force and also on the quality of the productive services rendered by the economically active Asians. Two non-economic determinants of the Asians' economic status are here singled out for closer inspection, namely, the religious beliefs of Asians and the phenomenon of discrimination against them.
