| Abstract: | Evidence indicated that the stereotype of the Luo peasant as arch-conservative and strongly resistant to change is inaccurate and underserved. Experimentation and change were a constant feature of the economy in Kowe, a representative Luo sublocation, and the present paper examines this process in the 1890s, a particularly dynamic period in Kowe. Focus is on three aspects of the change that took place: the shifting balance between pastoralism and agriculture, changes in crops and technology, and the growth of markets and trade networks.
