Abstract:	This paper examines some of the theoretical choices in herd management strategy facing a given nomad society and shows how these choices are made rationally in relation to the environment. In the light of these choices a model of nomad behaviour in relation to pasture and water resources is constructed and the consequences of some recent changes beyond the nomads' control are described.
