Abstract:Even before the occupation of Ashanti (1896) the British government and the local colonial administration were anxious to determine suitable locations for administrative centers in the peripheries of the country to contain French and German enterprise to the west and east respectively. The article describes this process which was disrupted by the outbreak of the First World War. Figs., notes.
