Abstract:The author first gives a review of Father Barreira's letters, of which several have been published in this bibliographical series. Then he presents a translation of Barreira's letter, written 9 March 1607 to the Provincial in Portugal. This letter is viewed in relation to a letter written 5 March 1607. Both letters are known from manuscripts preserved in Rome, and were published in 1968. The letter from the 9th of March 1607, is, apart from the reference in it to the Portuguese conquista, of interest in its proposal for a 'College' - a Jesuit seminary - at Sierra Leone, some two and a half centuries before the establishment of Fourah Bay College, and also in its references to the baptism of Turay (Tora), to epidemics, to burial customs, and to the early activities of the hated rivals of the Portuguese, the Dutch. Father Barreira's letters of 1606-7 are the earliest extant letters written from Sierra Leone. Notes.
