Abstract:Samuel Brun, or Braun, a young surgeon from Basel, made three voyages to West Africa on Dutch ships between 1611 and 1620. In 1624 he published at Basel his 'Schiffarten' (Voyages), one of the very few sources on Black Africa in the German language to appear before the nineteenth century. Brun's account appeared almost at the same time as Ruiter's (see art. 2 and 4 in this series), and only a little later than the Schouten/le Maire accounts (see art. 10). One interesting point brought out by Brun is that female labour in traditional agriculture in Sierra Leone earned economic returns to the women, and not to men as was usually supposed. Though- the trade for rice was done by the men, what was received in exchange was specifically for the women who produced the rice. Notes, err.
