Abstract: | The German sources have been virtually Ignored by many writers on 17th-century West Africa, Having just completed a critical English edition of 17th-century German writings on West Africa, 'German Sources for West African History, 1599-1669' (Wiesbaden, forthcomming), the author thinks it appropriate to review the extent to which these can be regarded as primary sources. In chronological order he looks at the following authors: Andreas Ulsheimer, Samiel Brun, Michael Hemmersam, Wilhelm Mülller, Hans Jacob zur Eich, Otto von der Groeben, Johann Oetinger. Some other German sources, mainly shorter documents, held in the archives of Emden, Merseburg, and Copenhagen, are also mentioned. In a postscript Johann von Lübelfing is mentioned. Notes. |
