Abstract: | First of a series of articles on early sources on Sierra Leone. One less well-known source on early Sierra Leone is a short text in French: 'Mémoires du Voyage aux Indes Orientates du General Beaulieu, dressis par luy-mesme'. Beaulieu visited Sierra Leone in 1619, but his account of his voyage does not appear to have been published until 1664, when it appeared in the first edition of Melchisedech Thevenot. 'Relation de Divers Voyages', Paris (in Tome 1, 2e partie). The account of the lies de Los and Sierra Leone (on p. 1-4 of the separately paginated Memoires) is of interest because it seems to be based solely on original observation. The text is presented in English translation, with comment and notes. |
