Abstract:Historians have thus far shown little sign of incorporating ethnographic data into their catalog of sources, or comparative ethnography into their methodological tool-kit. In this essay the author draws on cultural evidence of a particulary important kind - that having to do with royal rites and titles - in an attempt to establish the presence of historical links of a fundamental kind between Rwanda and her -neighbors in eastern Zaire, He identifies five common elements in royal ritual Rwanda's Zaire neighbors, and next turns to the rich body of Rwanda literature, as well as Rwanda's oral traditions, in an attempt to reevaluate Rwanda's rite as a means of testing the hypothesis that Rwanda mwami shared many common features with his counterparts to the west.
