Abstract:The Merina of the central highlands of Madagascar have produced a large corpus of historical literature, which the author describes, while pointing out some of the problems of using it. The author focusses not only on the Malagasy milieu which gave rise to historical material, but also on the way in which European ideas of social evolution penetrated Marina thinking and the effect of the introduction of writing and printing on Malagasy texts. To illustrate these general points, a particular historical problem is examined - the founding of the Merina monarchy - to show how the transformation of Merina kinglists through years of editing created a new vision of the past.
