| Abstract: | The location of the Lower Shire Valley of Malawi made it the centre of a powerful state system, which ended in 1622 when Lundu, the paramount chief of the valley, was defeated by the combined forces of the Portuguese and a rival paramount. This article identifies some of the events and processes which have contributed to the rise of the Lundu state in the late sixteenth century. It is also concerned with the fate of the common people during that period. A central figure in the oral history relating to that period is Mbona. The stories about his life and death originated in connection with the rise of the Lundu state and reflect the reaction of the commonalty to that event. Notes, ref. |
