Abstract:This paper is substantially an adventure in the collation of varied though convergent evidence with a focus on Ile-Ife. The author has not undertaken any on-the-spot study in Ile-Ife, the town, district and kingdom located in the central area of the Yoruba-speaking portion of Nigeria. He has not recovered any new or original information from the Ile-Ife area. What original data he has got relate to the region some 200 km to the north-east of Ile-Ife. Here, two of the polities-are known as life and Ufe. Tliis does not, substantially alter the basic contradiction of this exercise which on many crucial issues set aside some entrenched viewpoints of the internal accounts on which it is based. It is clear that as far as Ile-Ife history is concerned, hypotheses shall continue to the juxtaposed, theories shall continue to displace one another wholly or in part, - all in the general progress towards more and more plausible outlines of the internal culture-history. Re-examination of the evidence on the Ife is important as the resolution of Yoruba historical studies in general depends in large measure upon the degree to which, the central Ife problem is. resolved.
