Abstract: | In the late 18th century, a group of dissatisfied Muslims became sufficiently strong to wrest control from the ruling dynasty of Futa Toro and create a new state called the Almamate under Abdul Qadir. He however ultimately failed in establishing a new state. In the mid-nineteenth century Umar led a similar movement of reform. He created a 'second' and 'true' Almamate at Nioro. At the same time Umar was organizing campaigns elsewhere. Aim of the article is to emphasize his striking dependence upon his native Futa Toro for recruits for his expeditions, an aspect which is neglected in most accounts. Maps, notes. |
