Abstract:	The Sinnar sultanate dominated much of the northern Nilotic Sudan during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, and has been generally recognized as one of the important states in northeastern Africa during that era. It seems, however, that historians of Africa know less about Sinnar than about the contemporary states of the western Sudanic region. The present study proposes to reconstruct a model of the governmental structure of Sinnar, incorporating the testimony of the better-known historical sources as well as evidence derived from less familiar ones. Conclusion: Several important similarities have been found between the Sinnar government and that of medieval Nubia. The author suggests that the Sinnar era could well be considered as a 'Nubian renaissance'. Notes.
