Abstract: | This article discusses the issues raised by A. Graham Tipple in his article 'The need for new urban housing in sub-Saharan Africa: problem or opportunity' (in: African Affairs, vol. 93, no. 373 (1994), p. 587-608) in the specific context of Cape Verde. It pays attention to the scale of need for urban housing in Cape Verde, the ability of households to afford housing, the role of public and private agencies in the provision of housing, housing as a productive investment, and ways to increase the supply of housing. The article shows that Cape Verde's housing problems are similar to those identified by Tipple for sub-Saharan countries in general. Notes, ref., sum. in English and Portuguese. |
