Abstract:Organised in March 1962, the Rhodesian Front swept to a surprise victory over the United Federal Party in the December 1962 election. Since then, as the governing party, it has led the country through a series of crises-the break-up of Federation, the ousting of a Prime Minister, the making of UDI, the fight against international economic sanctions, and the protracted, inconclusive negotiations with Britain-without showing a sign of relinquishing its hold upon the government. The article describes the evolution of the Rhodesian Front as an organisation, suggests the dominant influences within the party, and analyses its methods of decision-making. 1. The Rhodesian Front Organisation (Membership; Branches; National Congress; The Party Executive; The National Standing Committee; The Party Finance Committee; Sub-commits tees of the Executive and NSC; The Party Secretariat) - 2. Power within the party organisation (The rural bias throughout the Party; The key individuals: the Party Officers; The caucus) - 3. Decision-making: Party and Government in Rhodesia (The RF under Winston Field; Collective leadership under Ian Smith) - 4. Conclusion. Notes, tables.
