Abstract: | When A. Boesak called for a united front of democratic organisations in early 1983, the response was immediate and overwhelming. Within a month, the United Democratic Front (UDF) was launched on a national level. At that time many grassroots organisations had been waging struggles at local levels (residents' organisations, anti-President's Council committees, the emergent trade union movement). The authors describe how the UDF succeeded in bringing these organisations into a broad national resistance movement. They also pay attention to the state's reaction to the UDF. Notes. |
