Abstract:On 1 August 1972 the Action Group, formed 30 years before, was quietly dissolved. From the mid-1940s to the late 1950s the Group, whose members held regular discussions and exercised a degree of political influence, virtually controlled the Matabeleland branches of the federal and territorial governing parties. By the early 1960s, however, as the membership was getting older the Group was becoming irrelevant. The surviving material of the Group provides some insights into recent Southern Rhodesian history, especially for the period from 1955 to 1965, 1. because members were drawn into discussions about the major issues of the day and heard information which was not recorded elsewhere, 2. because it incorporates the attitudes of people who thought of themselve as 'moderate' and 'progressive'.
