| Abstract: | This study on the exact nature of the political leadership of Chief Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi, Chief Minister of South Africa's KwaZulu homeland, aims at ascertaining the relative strength of the various political attitudes which Chief Buthelezi assumes. The conclusion seems to be that there can be no single reliable categorization of Chief Buthelezi as a political leader. Although he seems to have compromised himself to 'working within the system' (in this respect he can be termed a 'collaborator' by the external liberation groups), the question can be asked whether the label of collaborator can be attached to a person who, in terms of attitudes, seems to be committed to 'liberation', 'black nationalism', etc. Sections: Chief Buthelezi's internal liberation strategy - Flexibility in attitude towards authorities - Ideological trends in political attitudes - Attitudes towards constitutional dispensations and future options.
