Abstract:This paper concentrates on Nyerere's leadership in order to highlight aspects of the relation between religious and political attitudes in his philosophy and career: the dynamics of thought and personality, not behaviour patterns. Sections: Zanaki tribal religion, Christian conversion and human equality - human equality and the independence movement - the application of the principle in practice - national identity and the national ethic - safeguards for human rights: government by consensus - the Arusha declaration of 1967: a national ethic and a religious convenant. Conclusion: Nyerere has developed out of his experience a political ideology based on his belief on human equality which performs the function of the specific ultimate value in his life.
