| Abstract: | In 1893 the Cape railway reached the Rand, in 1895 the railway form Lourenco tarques connected up with Johannesburg, followes at its heels by the line from Durban. So the stage was set for a fierce struggle between the converging lines to capture part of the lucrative Rand import traffic, a rivalry that was one of the main features in South African history, during the 15 years which still remained before the Union of South Africa materialized. The race for the Rand - Bitter rivalry - The Mozambique convention (April 1909) - Share of the port of Lourenco Marques in the seaborne import traffic of the 'competitive area' since 1909-1934; Mozambique convention amended - Pattern of competition between the rival South African and Mozambique ports - The changes of bringing down the share of Lourenco Marques in the oceanborne imports of the 'competitive area'. |
