Abstract: | This study quantifies and compares the rates of progress of feeder road construction by labour-based and by equipment-intensive contractors in Ghana and discusses the factors that constrain these rates. A total of 34 donor-funded projects executed between 1993 and 1997 were selected for the study. The technical content of each study project was broken down into the following operations: site preparation, reshaping, gravelling, culvert construction, and earthworks. Factors affecting the rate of progress included: labour availability, equipment breakdown, topography of the site, rainfall, and uncertainty in the flow of work. Bibliogr., note. |
