Abstract: | Part 1 of this article shows the social characteristics of hospitalised lepers, the attempts of lepers to build up a new community in Ngomahuru and their difficulties in reintegrating themselves into the wider society once they have been discharged as non-infective or cured. Part 2 presents a tentative comparison between the social characteristics of the lepers in Ngomahuru and the social characteristics of the remaining African population of Rhodesia. The author has since 1965 paid several visits to Ngonahuru where she was informed about the camp and the various establishments were shown to her. A young leper undertook for her a social survey of all the lepers in the camp. It is mainly on this survey and on the A.'s interviews with the staff that this article is based.
