Abstract:The establishment of a British colony at Lagos in 1861 is a well-known aspect of Nigerian history. The importance of the fugitive slave question as a factor in the relations between the colony and the rest of the Yoruba country, remains largely a neglected theme. The increasing flight of slaves to Lagos from Abeokuta and other parts of the interior was a real point of disagreement. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the fugitive slave problem, with due emphasis on the anti-British feelings it generated among the Yoruba, and shows what antipathy it bred between British administrators at Lagos and British missionaries in the Yoruba interior.
