Abstract:The author joined a party in search of a prospecting grant from Lobengula in 1889, and arrived there at a critical time. The Matabele felt threatened by the rumours of the coming of 'Rhodes's Impi' the Pioneers with their police escort, while Lobengula tried to compromise and assist the white men.
