Abstract:The author studied hikayahs (true stories) in a Tunisian Mediterranean town (1978/79). A description of her work and its debt to the historico-philosophical development of North American folkloristics provides some points of contrast with the negative perception of many conscientious social scientists studying the Maghreb today who are suspicious of folklore research and only use the term 'folklore' as a pejorative.
