| Abstract: | Outlines the potential for transport fuels in terms of resources and technical factors which will influence future choices. There can be no doubt that future transport fuels will be produced from coal unless large reserves of oil and gas are discovered. Direct liquefaction of coal can only be applied to a limited extent due to the lack of enough suitable coal. The only other alternatives are either Fischer-Tropisch Synthesis or methanol. Products from F-T can be used without engine modifications and the market requirements for petrol and diesel can be met at all times. Methanol can be used as blend stock thereby extending crude oil derived fuels. Pure methanol can only be used if engines are modified and/or suitable additives are developed. At this moment of time F-T would seem to be the most rational alternative. Fig., ref., tab. |
