Abstract:The Burji, whose original homeland is situated on the eastern side of Ethiopia's Rift Valley, are agriculturalists and speak an East Cushitic language also called Burji. The most important anthropological fieldwork on the Burji was carried out by the late Helmut Straube (d. 1984) in 1955 and 1973-1974. The present publication is based on his unpublished notes. It consists of an ethnographic vocabulary which describes specific features of Burji culture by means of the associated terminology. The vocabulary proper is preceded by some notes on Burji social organization and religion, agriculture and linguistics. Bibliogr., notes, ref.
