Abstract: | As a solution to methodological problems involved in researching strikes undertaken by the working class of the Third World, this paper argues that the very nature of the Third World strike requires the use of multiple methods of data collection. The value of such an approach is illustrated with the aid of the author's research on industrial strikes in Kano, Nigeria: The historical development of Kano: origins of uneven development - Multiple method approach to strikes: a natural history - Analyzing multiple method data: urban status and strike support - Historical method: Islamic nationalism and strike support - Uneven development and cohesion: the labour process and strike support.
