Abstract: | Aim is to show that the 1927 strike, by the nature of its organization and leadership, was an important event in the proletarianization of the African peasantry of Central Africa. The article analyses the causes, organisation and repercussions of the strike in the context of the economic development of Southern Rhodesia and the attitude of white labour to the industrial advance of the semi-skilled or skilled African in the preceding decade.
