Abstract:The immediate outcome of the shooting incident in Enugu Colliery was a controversy as to whether events leading to the incident were activated. by political movement or whether they were an unfortunate end result of a normal process of economic and employment relations in the coal industry. This study is an outline investigation of the extent to which the happenings in the colliery up to its explosive end in 1949 were, if at all, part of a system of workers' conscious contribution to Nigeria's nationalist or national political movement. As this study is one of a few independent and unofficial investigations on the subject of the shooting incident, it is expected that the facts here may not be full and the conclusions may only be tentative.
