Abstract:One of the consequences of more than eighty years of African subjugation in Rhodesia has been that there exists even today only a handful effective country-wide organisations spon-sored and controlled by Africans. Among the most extensive organisational penetration are the unions. The special interest of workers' unions lies in four facts: 1. their location in the modern, predominantly urban, sector, 2. the importance of wage employment for the African population more generally, 3. their transregional and trans 'tribal' character, and 4. in the context of the country' isolation after U.D.I. their international links. So the actual and potential political significance of black unionism is evident. Sections of the article: The development and impact of black labour associations - The institutional framework and industrial peace' - Social characteristics of black industrial labour - Further organisational constraints - The consequences of international involvement - White workers and the multi-racial unions - Conclusions: The past and possible future role of black unions.
