Abstract:This article contains a summary of a chronicle of events during the abortive coup which took place in Ethiopia in December 1960, written by Mahteme-Sillasé Welde Mesqel, a Crown Councillor. It is an annotated summary of the original Amharic manuscript in abbreviated form because the author's family did not allow a literal translation to be published. The editor has also briefly summarized announcements, proclamations, and speeches made during the rebellion, as well as the notes taken by the chronicler at meetings of the Crown Council, all appended to the record of the events as Mahteme-Sillasé saw them. The palace coup by the imperial bodyguard took place while Emperor Haile Selassie was on a visit to Brazil. It was quickly suppressed by the army, with support from the air force. Although Mahteme-Sillasé was conservative and more loyal to the emperor than most, his chronicling of events seems to give a fair and balanced picture. The coup was obviously poorly planned, so it was bound to fail.
