| Abstract: | Developments from 1958-1965: Nigerian trade unionism has been born in 1912 with the formation of the Nigerian Civil Service Union. In 1958 the Trades Union Ordinance became the legal basis for trade union organization. An unprecedented number of unions came into existence after in 1959 the Ordinance had come into force. Other contributing factors were the serious hardship of the workers during the find World War and western school education. Special attention is paid to trade union growth during the period 1959-1965. Examination of the character of Nigerian trade union membership shows that the figures quoted in the government official publications are mere approximations. Examination of the various bodies described as trade unions in the official records of the Federal Ministry of Labour shows that some of these organizations are neither 'trade union' nor 'employers' association' but 'trade guilds'.
