Abstract:This article deals mainly with the emergence and struggles of Black trade unions in South Africa in the 1970s and their achievements up to 1984, but also briefly looks at the history of African trade unions and provides the setting for the 1970s and 1980s. If focuses on the group of Black unions, overwhelmingly African in memberships, referred to as the independent trade unions. Contents: Historical background and setting (history of African trade unions in South Africa, economic growth and structural changes in the 1960s, the South African labour force in the 1970s, the industrial relations system in South Africa in early 1970s) - Emergence of the Independent trade unions in the 1970s (origins and formation, initial organizational experiences and strategies of the unions, union setbacks in 1976, recovery and recognition struggles of unions 1977-1979, international campaigns for recognition, achievements of the independent unions in the 1970s) -The state's response and developments in the 1980s (the Wiehahn Commision and state recognition of African unions, advances by the independent trade unions in the 1980s) - Conclusion (consolidation of the independent trade unions).
