Abstract: | This study presents a survey of organizational and economic aspects of agricultural production in the Gezira Irrigation Scheme in Sudan, which is managed by the parastatal Sudan Gezira Board. The main crops produced are cotton, sorghum, wheat and groundnuts. The study pays attention to the historical development of the scheme, its current situation and organization, climate and soils, land tenure, cropping patterns (crop rotation and cropping calendar), production relations, agricultural production (input supply and costs of production), water resources (the distribution system and the demand for irrigation water), labour input, production credit, agricultural research, and produce marketing. Most statistical data refer to the 1980s. Bibliogr. |
