Abstract:It has been unanimously agreed that cotton failed to become the chief cashcrop of the Nyanza Province during the colonial era. This was attributed to the people's preference to cultivate maize (Hugh Fearn) and to the lack of labour supply (C.C. Wrigley). Despite these explanations, cotton has. become since then an important element in the economy of Nyanza Province. Explored is here the degree to which the cultivation of cotton was of benefit to the grower, either economically or socially between 1945-1965. Notes., ref., tables.
