Abstract:In 1970 NEDECO published their 'Development of the Ports of Nigeria 1970-1990', and for the first time there was a specific reference to transport optimization in Nigeria. An optimization model was specified and the procedure was carried out in a macro-economic context. Purpose of the present paper is to present; the result of a study of the application of an optimization modal to the transportation of groundnuts in Nigeria. The author uses a framework which is basically different from that of NEDECO but beliefs that the two frameworks are to be considered as complementary to each other. After an introduction follows in section 2 a discussion of the relative importance of groundnut production in Nigeria, and attention is drawn to a micro-economic approach to the study of groundnut evacuation. Section 3 considers the model developed by the author and its relation to the NEDECO modal. Section 4:: Data and some empirical results. Section 5: Concluding remarks, Notes, tables, appendices.
