Abstract: | From the beginning of the 20th century until the late 1940s, rail, river and road were the form of transportation which opened up new areas by offering bulk shipping facilities. Since World War II, however, Nigeria has experienced another transport revolution in the introduction of the air transportation system. Though today, in terms of traffic volume, air transport is still the least important form of transportation in the country, it has a great potential role to play in the country's continued economic development. This paper examines the growth and structural characteristics of this relatively new and rapid- expanding form of transport in Nigeria. Attention is concentrated mainly on the twelve major airports which are maintained and operated by the Civil Aviation Department and on which Nigeria Airways have scheduled services.
