Abstract: | The facts and figures presented here concern a trade which has declined most markedly in recent years. A number of reasons however makes it a theme of continuing relevance in geographical study: Its foundations are essentially geographical; The dhow trade ranks with the Saharan cara-? van trade as a strong economic and cultural contact of tropical Africa with the outside world before the European influences of the 16th century onwards; The seaward dhow routes had their landward counterparts probing towards the interior of tropical Africa; Because of its sustained influences upon populations, crops, cultures and politics, the dhow circulation is significant in the stimulating task of projecting Africa's pre-colonial history further and more firmly into the past; and for the same reasons, it is also significant in relation to the contemporary scene.
