Abstract: | The name 'Jarawa' has been a source of considerable confusion in the linguistic literature. In Nigeria it is still regulalry applied to at least two distinct linguistic entities. The first is a Plateau language sometimes called Jarawan Dutse ('Hill Jarawa'). The second is a dialect cluster sometimes called Jarawan Kasa ('Plain Jarawa') which, together with closely related languages, has been regarded as Bantu by a number of scholars. It is the group of languages that includes 'Plain Jarawa' which is treated in this article. Previous work on all the languages of the group is surveyed and a classification and nomenclature are suggested which it is hoped will make it possible to avoid confusion in the future. Notes, refs., tables, map. Selected comparative word-lists are included in an appendix. |
